A busy start to the week here at Turbo Repairs UK, this BMW 520 turbo with electronic actuator was overhauled yesterday and will be arriving back with its owner today.

The electronic actuator was fine but the mechanical side was severely damaged. Wastegate assembly needed replacing and the compressor and impellor blades too. The turbo bearings showed score marks suggesting contaminated oil was circulating the engine. A turbo repair to this was priced £250.00+vat including carriage to Burnley and given a 2 year warranty.

We also had a Skoda Octavia in for a turbo overhaul , the wastegate was clogged up with sticky carbon due to oil leaking from the rear turbo seals. Once the housings were cleaned up it was a case of replacing the bearings and seals and shotblasting the wastegate.

Finally it was given a balance to reduce any vibration.  This turbo was finished this morning and will be dispatched today for Wednesday delivery.

At Turbo Repairs UK we often see a recurring issue with why turbos fail in the first place. The main issue being dirty oil. Regular oil and filter changes are essential to the well being of the turbo. Older vehicles may also have a restriction of oil to the turbo bearings. A build up of carbon on the turbo oil feed pipe means there is insufficient oil lubricating the internals. cleaning the pipe may not remedy the problem so we advise replacing the oil feed pipe.

For the mechanics out there we would also advise checking the crank case breather when fitting a turbo. We recently repaired a turbo but once it was fitted to the vehicle it began to leak oil. The garage suggested the turbo was still faulty but we advised checking the crankcase breather before removing.  The breather was found to be blocked, a new one was fitted and is now working fine.
