A busy month here at Turbo Repairs UK. Overhauling turbochargers is our main objective as the pricing is much lower than offering a new or reconditioned turbo. The 2 year warranty is the same whether it be a repair or off-the-shelf item so saving pounds is the customers main priority.
We have had a run on BMW 320 turbo’s this month, repairing 5 and selling 2 reconditioned turbos. It’s always worth repeating that the engine breathers are prone to carbon build up, this makes them act like they are worn and cause oil leakages from even a brand new turbo.
We have also overhauled more Ford Focus 1.6tdci turbo’s, these turbo’s are fitted to other various models all using the same Peugeot engine with the codes DV6TED4/DV6UTED4. They are also used by Citroen, Peugeot, Mazda, Ford and Volvo, with them all having the same oil issues i.e carbon in the oil.
The carbon in the oil blocks the pickup strainer in the sump and also the gauze in the oil feed pipe where the flow of oil through the turbo is restricted, this causes wear on the turbo bearings and so inevitably resulting in turbo failure. We supply a special check-list and fitting instructions for this type of turbo.
The importance of asking why
Replacing a failed turbo is not just about asking how (how do I remove and refit a replacement turbo?) or even what (what is wrong with the turbo?).
It is important to ask why (why did the turbo fail?).
Failure to ask this question can lead to a very expensive learning curve. It is important because turbocharger’s rely on the engine being in good working order for its longevity. It is not just a bolt- on stand alone component like an alternator or starter motor, it depends on the engine for lubrication, the integrity of the exhaust gasses to drive the impeller and the cleanliness of the air intake feeding the compressor.
